The aim of our Child Protection work is to safeguard and promote our children’s welfare, safety, health and guidance by fostering an honest, open caring and supportive climate.

Their welfare is of paramount importance. St George’s School fully recognises the responsibility it has under the Education Act 2002 and the contribution it can make to protect children and support them in school. All staff involved with children (teaching and non-teaching) have a responsibility to be mindful of issues related to children’s safety and welfare and a duty to report and refer any concerns.

We believe that:

  • All children have the right to be protected from harm
  • Children need to be safe and to feel safe in school
  • Children need support which matches their individual needs, including those who may have experienced abuse
  • All children have the right to speak freely and voice their values and beliefs
  • All children must be encouraged to respect each other’s values and support each other
  • All children have the right to be supported to meet their emotional, and social needs as well as their educational needs – a happy healthy sociable child will achieve better educationally
  • Schools can and do contribute to the prevention of abuse, victimisation, bullying, exploitation, radicalisation, extreme behaviours, discriminatory views and risk taking behaviours
  • All staff and visitors have an important role to play in safeguarding children and protecting them from abuse.

Pupil safeguarding and the promotion of fundamental British Values are a core business of our work at St George’s School.

We have developed an open and safe learning environment in which pupils express their views, seek help and help others, they make use of our class WORRY Monsters/Jars to share concerns with staff as well as knowing they can talk to any of the adults in school. The promotion of equality of opportunity and diversity, for pupils and staff, helps prevent any form of direct or indirect discriminatory behaviour. Our children learn not to tolerate any prejudiced behaviour.  Our Behaviour Policy promotes making good choices and exhibiting good learning behaviours.

Throughout the curriculum there are planned opportunities to promote all forms of equality and foster greater understanding of and respect for people off all faiths (and those with no faith), races, genders, ages, disability and sexual orientations, through their words, actions and in their influence.  Opportunities are created in a variety of subjects to address areas of safeguarding, for example, themes are highlighted through different text in English lessons.

Whole school assembly time and key stage assembly times are used to promote personal safeguarding matters and explore themes.  For example, we talk about anti-bullying including cyber bullying and British Values including how these values are promoted in our multi-faith society.

We take time at the beginning of every new school year to reaffirm our school core values and golden rules.  This is a good start to the year, with everyone clear on their roles and responsibilities, sets the tone for the rest of the year and leads to excellent safeguarding outcomes.

We plan to constantly challenge children to think deeply about safeguarding matters and their own personal physical and mental wellbeing. We value pupils’ questions and give them space for their own thoughts, ideas and concerns. We give them opportunities across the curriculum to explore values, personal rights, responsibilities and equal opportunities that develop moral concepts that impact positively on safeguarding, promote British values and prevent radicalisation and extremism.

There are many learning opportunities within a school year to explore safeguarding issues.

Practical safeguarding opportunities are planned into the curriculum.

For example:

  • Our annual safeguarding assembly programme includes - ‘Speak out, Stay Safe’ NSPCC assemblies. Road, fire, sun, water and E-safety and where possible with support from external visitors including the RLNI, Dog’s Trust and other services. Anti-bullying week, Black History month and different religious festivals also feature in our rolling assembly programme.
  • Out of school visits and opportunities such as bikeability.
  • Water safety is developed further with poolside and water safety through swimming lessons using our own pool.
  • Fire awareness is developed further with visits from the local fire service to specified year groups
  • Visitors from charities such as Barnados, NSPCC, the Dogs Trust as well as out Pets as Therapy dogs, to do focused projects
  • Online safety quizzes and training are part of our computing curriculum.
  • We produce a termly safeguarding update for parents about topical and current safeguarding and e-safety tips and guidance.

Our key safeguarding policies can be found below. For other policies follow the link Policies.

St George's Early Help Offer

We have a strong culture of safeguarding: children know they are valued and will be listened to. We appreciate the importance of early help in our safeguarding duty, and we aim to recognise families and children who may benefit from early intervention and put this in place in a timely manner.

We ensure that our children get the support that they need, at the time that they need it. This keeps them safe and, ultimately, enables them to learn, and shine in everything they do.

You can read more information about our early help offer in the document below:

Sexual Violence, sexual harassment and harmful sexual behaviours

When responding to any claim of sexual violence, sexual harassment and harmful sexual behaviour, we use the following system and procedure:

Please note that the DfE has also recently published guidance for young people to help them understand the law on making or sharing indecent images of children.

 Safeguarding Newsletters for Parents

Each term we produce a Safeguarding information newsletter which we send home to all our families.

Please see copies of our recent newsletters below.

Anti-Bullying

Bullying of any kind is unacceptable in our school. We strive to maintain our anti-bullying ethos in which relationships are based on mutual respect, trust, caring and consideration for others. If bullying does occur, all pupils should feel empowered to tell someone and feel secure in the knowledge that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively.

We recognise the need not only to respond to and manage incidents of bullying effectively, but also to actively seek to prevent the occurrence of bulling. We actively promote the safeguarding of children through the National Curriculum (ie. issues of personal safety, self-esteem, anti-bullying and racism).

If any parent is concerned about a child's behaviour at school they can contact the class teacher directly and it will be dealt with immediately. We get very few incidences of bullying type behaviour amongst our children, but please do get in touch if you are concerned.

Read our Anti-Bullying Policy for more information - it can be found on the policy page of our website.

Safer Recruitment

The Governing Body recognises the legal requirements for recruiting and employing people to work at St George's School and following these requirements is an essential part of our duty of care.    The school has a Safer Recruitment Policy that is available on request.   All of our interview panels have at least one member of staff who has undertaken a safer recruitment training course.

Site Safety

Site safety is extremely important and we look after your children very carefully whilst they are with us.  For the children's safety the playground gates are locked from 8:45am, and children arriving late must enter the school via the main gate (where Mrs Miller will come out to meet you) and sign in at the main entrance.    Gates to the school are all locked throughout the school day from 8:45am to 3:15pm.  Each gate has a combination code which only the staff are aware of.  The codes are frequently changed on all gates.

All visitors are escorted to the main entrance from the main gate to sign in. They are presented with a colour coded visitors lanyard which is worn at all times whilst they are on school site.

All staff are mindful that they should raise any concerns or any dangers around the school grounds immediately.    We have termly fire drill practices with each one being at a different time of the day.

Parents are frequently reminded about not using the school car park at drop off and pick up times to allow the safe entrance of the school minibus.  Parents, children and visitors are reminded to use the footpath by the church wall rather than walking through the car park area.

During playtimes and lunchtimes our playground and field is well supervised with members of staff on duty wearing Hi Viz jackets.  They have a walkie talkie direct into the school office. A member of school staff is positioned on duty by the school gates at all times during play time and lunch times.

Staff ensure first aid kits and medical equipment is taken out on to the playground and field during all playtimes, lunchtimes and outdoor lessons.
